"If our devotion is to the cause of humanity, we will be quickly defeated and broken-hearted, since we will often be confronted with a great deal of ingratitude from other people. But if we are motivated by our love for God, no amount of ingratitude will be able to hinder us from serving one another."

Countertops - Step 1

After much research, I'm ready to tackle the countertops.  I chose the Giani Bombay Black kit.  If you use this product, be sure to read the directions, watch the DVD and read the directions again before you begin.  There is no time to stop and double check yourself once you've begun.  Prepping the surface is as important as they say it is, so don't cut corners.

Our countertops were in very good condition so I didn't need to putty or fill any cracks or chips.  Whew!  I used steel wool and soapy water to clean the surfaces.  I wiped them down with a wet cloth and then dried them with a clean dry towel.
Tape off any areas that you don't want paint on.  Like the front of your cabinets and your backsplash area.  Then begin with a foam brush and apply paint in the corners where the backsplash meets the countertop.  Work in areas of three feet at a time like they suggest.  Then roll on the primer.  Move to the next section and repeat the process until completed.  The primer must dry for 8 hours before applying your faux finish.  I'm hoping to get to that step tonight.

Here's a picture testimony of what I've done so far.

Ready to clean!

Now they are ready for the primer!

When I opened the can of primer, I noticed that it wasn't completely full yet the can didn't appear to be tampered with and fortunately it was enough to cover.  If I find that I need more, I'll contact the company.  From what I've read they are awesome at customer service and I bet they'd send out extra if I needed it.

Thank goodness this cabinet slips in and out of place.  Found that out when I painted the walls.

All the supplies you need are included in the kit.  Minus, 600 grit sandpaper, roller tray and liners and cleaning supplies.

Paint.  I love everything about paint, the smell, the fresh look, the possibilities are endless with a can of paint.  Giani counter top and cabinet paint kits are available at Amazon or their website.

This foam brush comes with the kit.  I found that I needed a more narrow one for behind my faucet.  Good thing I had one in my supplies.
Try hard not to back roll.  Maybe that isn't an issue for any of you, but I really struggle with it.  Drives Shawn nuts!  Lay it on, Level it out and Leave it alone - the 3 Ls to successful painting.
 Edging the backsplash

Progress! And, yes, it goes on very shiny and tacky.  Don't worry.  It will dry in a nice matte finish.

All dry.  See, it really does dry with a matte finish. The challenge is to keep it dry and clean throughout the dinner hour.  Tomorrow morning, I will sponge on the faux finish design and then hopefully, later in the evening apply the top coat.  I'm anxious to have full access to my kitchen again.
