"If our devotion is to the cause of humanity, we will be quickly defeated and broken-hearted, since we will often be confronted with a great deal of ingratitude from other people. But if we are motivated by our love for God, no amount of ingratitude will be able to hinder us from serving one another."

Kids and Phones - Let's Talk About It

Kids and Cell Phones
I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Please read the article below and share your feelings on the matter below in the comment section.  There are many other similar articles raising awareness out there, but I just happen to stumble upon this one.

5 Reasons Your Kid Should Not Have A Cell Phone

I’ll admit it. I’m a dinosaur among my friends because I won’t get my kids a cell phone. My daughters, aged 9 and 11, remind me of that daily with pleas of “I’m the only one without a phone; all my friends have one. Why can’t I?”
So, because I didn’t want to sound like my mother who always countered with “If everyone was jumping off a bridge, would you do it too?,” I decided to look for a better answer. I was shocked to discover that 21% of children 8 years and younger use smart phones! Wow younger than 8! And 78% of children aged 12 to 17 already have a cell phone.

This is definitely a delicate subject considering everyone has their own opinion on this! I do agree with the author that the decision must be based on the maturity level of the child. We also based ours on circumstance as well knowing that when they went from elementary to middle school there would be times of staying after for different events/sports and we wanted the boys to be able to contact us if they got "stuck" (and it has happened!). It's also important to have a firm grip on the securities such as password protected wifi and we also have a record of any site they use (and we check!!). The use of cell phones can be dangerous if not monitored but I believe with frequent monitoring they can be used for their intended purpose! Again I agree with the author it's not a decision to be taken lightly.
